Fruits of the Season

When I was a girl, we used to go visit my grandparents in Mesa, Arizona. Next to the old house, which was the first frame house built in that town, there was a tangerine tree. I don't have much of a sense of smell, so unlike most people, I don't associate many memories with smell. However, every fall when we start seeing tangerines in stores, I buy them. Every single time someone peels one, I smell that tangy aroma, and a flood of memories come back. Of grandma getting dinner on the table while I snacked on one. Of the smell of the tree outside as we played "No Bears Out Tonight" or picked it's fruit. Whenever I eat a tangerine, not only do I love the taste, but I'm a kid again.

Then there are the pomegranates. These are still pretty hard to come by here in Utah, but I will pay too much, even though they don't taste as good as the ones off our tree in California. This has to be one of the most beautiful fruits to look at and it is one of my very favorite kinds to eat. It is so juicy and delicious. The darker and juicier, the better.
Don't worry, they drip all over, but there are no stains on my counter top anymore. (That's what comet was invented for.) I just love these last offerings of the season before winter sets in and we have to live off apples, oranges, bananas and canned fruit.

I remember that tree, too. I thought those tangerines were the best tasting in the world! (And then there were the grapefruits at Grandpa Johnson's house...) The tangerine flavored jelly bellies are pretty good, too!

Pomegranates really are beautiful - no other fruit is that color! They are delicious too.

Those tangerines WERE the BEST in the world! Too bad the tree got old and stopped bearing fruit. I always do the same thing when I see tangerines--MUST buy them even though they aren't as good. And I am flooded with memories when I eat them, too. And I miss that pomegranate tree, too.

Pomegranates remind me of my grandmother. She used to eat them on everything in the fall. But she couldn't peel them, so she would pay me or my cousins to do it for her!

Thanks for a walk down memory lane...as well as visiting my story. Happy weekend!

Thanks so much for the kind words you left on my comments. I have so much admiration and appreciation for adoptive parents. Their love and acceptance is such a gift. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wonderful family.

Poms are so the rave lately! I haven't had one in AGES!

I have one sitting on my counter and I don't know what to do with it. Maybe I'll cut it before it spoils. Maybe I should buy comet before I cut it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Isn't great how seemingly little things can bring back important memories? For me, it's Dial soap. My Gramma had such a clean home, and the bathrooms always smelled of Dial soap. :)

Thanks for stopping by my Photostory!
